Sexy Sunday jam.

Frankly addicted to this song I heard last week on triple j‘s legendary Like A Version segment. I hadn’t heard the original Lykke Li (though I’m a big fan of hers) version before I heard Lily Allen (whattababe) killing the cover with a smoking hot outfit to boot (how can someone look so fresh so early in the morning?).

(Lover) You Don’t Treat Me No Good

Chet Faker‘s star rose quick. From the likes of the sultry I’m Into You, with its killer hooks and dripping raw soul, it’s little wonder. Chet’s Like A Version for Triple J is easily the best I’ve heard this year.

The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway…

Queen Elsa

When it’s been as long between posts as it has been since I shared my thoughts on Robin Williams death and Good Morning Vietnam, one can be easily overwhelmed by where to start. Too many of the music joy has come into my life, moved me and given me chills and feels that a focus point escapes me, to be honest. So nevermind focus! I think at times like these, one is best served to jump right in and Let It Go… Read the rest of this entry »

If you’re a Like A Version virgin…

In Uncategorized on August 9, 2014 at 4:16 am

…these clips are a good place to start with Triple J‘s favourite segment.

Like A Version has been going strong on Friday mornings at your favourite radio station for nigh on a decade now.

It’s where the coolest names in the biz get a chance to play a favourite cover on live radio, and it’s simultaneously recorded by the expert team that records sound and video stuffs at the Js.

Sometimes, the cover is mediocre at best. Sometimes, it is magic. Below are my favourite Like A Version moments. Read the rest of this entry »

I can't make you love my cover

In Uncategorized on June 24, 2012 at 6:42 am

The art of the cover – that which can make a song come alive or kill it stone dead. Nothing is more divisive. When it’s done good, it’s special. When its done badly, it’s traumatic – like watching someone belt up a loved one.

Today is a Sunday, and on a Sunday I love nothing more than to hibernate and watch youtube clips. Especially conducive to Sunday youtube sessions is Bon Iver. Nothing screams end-of-the-weekend moping like Vernon. Read the rest of this entry »

Love is all, from what I’ve heard

In Uncategorized on June 3, 2012 at 4:11 am

I am starting to worry that I’m becoming a bit repetitive with my blog content. However, it’s a grey and dreary Sunday, I’ve woken up with a gross sore throat and am still in my pyjamas. So there’s one thing for it: Kristian Mattson, aka. The Tallest Man on Earth.

I know I’ve blogged about him more than once – as one of the best gigs of 2011 and his new album – but he really is an artist that warrants this attention.

This is one of my favourite TMOE songs – live for Jools Holland.

Another Sunday song: Bon Iver‘s ‘Skinny Love’. Does it get better? It is literally achingly beautiful – by the end of this song, my chest feels heavier. Life feels more precious.

A worthy cover by Birdy. Surprisingly good. Testament to the strength of Justin Vernon‘s songwriting, or to Birdy’s performance?
